District 214

Background:

Established in 1914, Township High School District 214 has grown to become the second largest high school district in Illinois, incorporating the communities of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling and Des Plaines. The combined enrollment in District 214 schools totals to approximately 12,000 students in addition to 180 employees. The governing board of District 214 has made the integration of technology into traditional educational techniques a priority, helping to develop their present reputation as a leader in successfully merging technology with education.

Challenge:

District 214 consists of six different high schools and the Forest View Education Center (home of the Administrative offices and alternative programs).  Completing a comprehensive video surveillance security system required coordinating with several administrators, IT departments and police departments concurrently. Each school had its own analog system which could not be taken down until the new cabling, cameras and servers were installed. Moreover, the project necessitated a decentralized system with the ability to view from anywhere within any of the six locales.

Solution:

We began by working closely with the district IT department in combination with each school’s respective IT staff and dean to effectively place the cameras and map out coverage areas. Ultimately, this resulted in the installation of over 700 new cameras while incorporating over 100 existing cameras into the new system. We were able to repurpose the district’s existing servers and switches and have additional parts provided as needed, saving the district time and money. User access levels were coordinated to accommodate both district and individual school requirements.
To elevate the user experience, we incorporated technological enhancements including HD resolution for clearer images as well as a mobile client for iPad and smartphone access. The mobile client also allows the district to set up ‘special event’ security stations anywhere, any time. Upon completion of the project, Pentegra adequately positioned District 214 for the future, allowing for a district-wide, integrated access control with video surveillance system.

Results:

Pentegra assisted in creating safer, more secure facilities with instant access for all six schools within the district. High quality video images have allowed for increased assurance and accuracy, while the addition of a mobile client provides flexibility for any necessity or urgency. The entire system is maintained by Pentegra systems, assuring continued, exceptional quality and service.
